Peptides: An Exciting New Therapy for Weight Loss, Pain, Recovery and More
Last week, a trainer at my gym pulled me aside in the middle of my 7am workout to ask about a “new” therapy called peptides. He had just returned from a visit with another practitioner who had talked them up but wasn't sure what I thought. I was excited to tell him: I’ve been using peptides in practice for over a year now and have seen some really incredible results. My conversation with him helped me to realize how few people know about this powerful tool, and quickly became the subject for our June blog.
Let's dive in….
What are peptides? Peptides are strings of amino acids, the same building blocks that make proteins, just shorter. Insulin is an example of a widely used peptide. The peptides that I use in my clinic have therapeutic benefits and have been researched in human and animal subjects. For the most part, when used appropriately, they do not have side effects. I run comprehensive bloodwork prior to prescribing peptides to make sure they are being used safely.
What do peptides treat? Peptides have been studied for a wide range of uses, and there are dozens of them currently on the market. Most commonly, I use peptides to:
Enhance weight loss
Decrease pain
Improve exercise recovery
Increase libido
Treat gut inflammation
Reduce allergies and autoimmunity
Improve sleep
How are they administered? Most are administered by a very small subcutaneous injection with an insulin syringe, but some forms are taken in capsule form, or as an intranasal spray.
Peptide Success Stories:
38 year old woman who was able to lose 20 pounds over 3 months without additional diet or exercise changes. The peptide used also healed her Achilles tendonitis and she was able to cancel an upcoming surgery intended to correct it.
30 year old woman who lost 30 pounds after 2 months of peptide therapy. She had previously been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes. We were able to reverse these diagnoses.
62 year old man with multiple sclerosis and painful neuropathy. With long-term peptide therapy, we are managing pain and preventing the progression of the disease.
31 year old man with intestinal permeability caused by multiple food sensitivities, acid reflux and GI inflammation. After 4 weeks of using the peptide protocol, he reported a significant improvement in all symptoms and was able to wean off his Prilosec prescription. We confirmed that intestinal permeability and inflammation has resolved using stool testing.
